Claydon House (Buckinghamshire): a lesson in entertainment and living within your means

~

The house above as it stands, and the house how it would have stood, had the foundations been strong enough and the coffers deep enough to pay for it.

    1. Yes, sorry that I don’t say much about the house but I agree – sometimes a house is just too big. The main thing I moan about at Claydon vis a vis how the NT have responded is that in order to preserve the staircase they’ve inserted a very small, steep one in the corner. A much less grand entrance to the upper floors. I was also surprised by what bad repair the Chinese room is in – I was expecting something pristine but the paint is peeling. The upstairs also feels rather like a council museum (dowdy, dust, cabinets filled with things brought home from holiday trips) and the rooms downstairs are mainly empty – ready for a drinks reception or a music recital I suppose. Florence Nightingale also spent her summer her as her sister lived in the house.
